Herbalists

It is a well-known fact that all the best herbalists are those who have suffered the 4 or more years' purgatory required to become members of the prestigious

National Institute of Medical Herbalists, UK.

For more information on the NIMH, please take a look at their, if I may say so, excellent website.

Consultations and Treatment
The first consultation lasts one hour.
To best appreciate your problem, I will ask you questions about your current state of health and any treatments, as well as previous medical history and general well-being. Simple diagnostic examinations may be needed. After discussion, I will offer advice and agree with you a course of action.

I will then generally propose some herbal treatment . This lasts typically for four weeks with a ½ hour follow-up consultation. Subsequent treatment will depend on how you have responded. It is not easy to predict how long treatment will be needed but I try at all times to give patients some idea of what to expect.

The medicines I prescribe are derived whenever possible from plants grown under controlled, organic conditions or ethically wild-crafted. I make most of my own medicines and buy only from carefully-selected sources.

Generally, medicines take the form of tinctures (alcohol extracts) and glycerites (glycerol extracts), but dried herbs, fresh juices, capsules, tablets, creams, oils or other external preparations may be offered.

How much does herbal treatment cost ?
Consultation Fees
Clinic consultations - £20
Home visits - £30
Children under 15 - £10
15 minutes for minor ailments or advice - FREE

* Help with fees may be possible if you are in need - please ask.
* Most private health insurance policies now cover complementary medicine.

Cost of Medicines
Generally £5 per week.

So there's a brief presentation of me. I am always pleased to receive correpondence and will do my best to help if you have any queries. Please appreciate though that I cannot enter detailed discussion about specific illnesses nor prescribe without having met you - this infringes the Code of Ethics of NIMH and various legal directives.

I would also like to add that it is not a good idea to self-prescribe unless you know your herbs very well, particularly if you are taking other medication. At the very least, "over-the-counter" treatment is rarely effective and can be very expensive. To work properly, herbs need to be matched to the individual - not to the "illness", and this requires professional evaluation.
Most herbalists will be happy to advise you for little or no fee - please check with one first.
You can find details of NIMH herbalists in your area (in the UK and throughout the world) on the NIMH website or in the members' register obtainable from NIMH, 56 Longbrook Street, Exeter EX 4 6AH, UK. Tel: 01392 426 022 or e-mail on nimh@ukexeter.freeserve.co.uk

Best wishes
Nigel
